As surprising as it may seem, it is possible to ski in Portugal. If you want to, head to the only ski resort in the country, in the heart of the magnificent Serra da Estrela mountains.

The Serra da Estrela, Portugal's highest peak

Located in the central region of Portugal, the Serra Estrela is the most emblematic mountain range of continental Portugal. It is  also the highest point of the country, reaching an altitude of 2000 meters. These mountains are part of a Natural Park protected since 1976 and it is the largest area of this type in Portugal.

The lowest temperatures in Portugal are recorded at the top of the Serra da Estrela: they can sometimes reach -20°C in winter! In the summer, the much pleasant temperatures make it possible to hike and enjoy the clean air of the Serra.

This region of Portugal is very famous for the production of traditional cheeses and tasting is a must if you plan to stay there.

Skiing in Portugal: an accessible dream

If you want to ski in Portugal, you won't have much choice since there is only one real ski resort. Simply called "Serra da Estrela Ski Resort" (Estância de ski da Serra da Estrela), it is located right next to Torre, the highest point in the country.

This family resort is ideal for beginners or those who want to have a good time on easy slopes. There are only 9 slopes, one of which is black, and most of the time only 4 or 5 slopes are open to the public. One of the advantages of this resort is the affordable prices for ski passes, equipment rental and private lessons.

Near the resort you can find the Torre cable car that will take you to the top of the Serra and a few miradouros, which offer an incredible view of the mountains.
