Serra da Estrela ski resort
When we think of Portugal, we imagine more sandy beaches than snowy slopes. And yet, there is indeed a ski resort!
At the top of a hill, this granite tower overlooks the city and offers us an exceptional view of the region
Today, only one tower remains from the castle of Guarda. Called "Torre de Menagem", it is a granite tower of very simple architecture but which offers a view over the city. Built in the 12th century, it was certainly part of a set of fortifications designed to protect the city.
You can easily park next to the castle and I advise you to leave your car there afterwards during your visit of the city center, which is mostly pedestrian and therefore difficult to access.
To go up to the castle, you cross a small garden in which there is an artistic installation, the "time capsule". A capsule was buried on July 1, 2013 under a large stone block and will not be opened until 2050. In this capsule, objects related to the year of its closure have been deposited. Each year, the anniversary of this project is the occasion to organize cultural events such as conferences for example.

The Cathedral of Guarda, an imposing granite construction, is a must when visiting the city.
