This set of 2 swallows, one small and one large, is entirely hand painted, according to the traditions of Coimbra ceramics. 

The ceramic swallow is one of the must-haves of the Portuguese culture. Symbol of love, family and loyalty, the Portuguese are very attached to these small birds that return every year to nest in the same place.

It is common to see ceramic swallows on the walls of Portuguese homes. This tradition is due to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a 19th century journalist and artist, who was the first to make ceramic swallows.
