The historical center of Chaves is composed of a maze of small pedestrian streets, each more charming than the other. It is pleasant to get lost in them and admire the fronts of the stone houses, colored or covered with Azulejo.
These small streets surround the Camões square, one of the most beautiful in the city. It is also almost pedestrian, so you can enjoy it and take the time to admire the historical buildings that surround it. Among them are the Church of Santa Maria Maior in Gothic style, the Town Hall of Chaves and the Museum of the Flaviense region. The other buildings are also worth a visit with their colorful facades and wrought iron balconies. In the square, just in front of the Town Hall, there is a statue of D. Afonso, the first Duke of Bragança.
