Located on the heights of the city, the castle of Chaves offers a magnificent view of the surroundings.
The history of Chaves has been strongly influenced by its location. Located in the very north of Portugal, only ten kilometers from the Spanish border, it is one of the "gateways" to Portugal and has therefore been an important defense post throughout the country's history. Many battles took place there, with the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors or the French and the Spanish. It was therefore essential to strengthen this strategic point to repel enemies.
In the heart of the city, not far from the charming little pedestrian streets, the castle, built in the 11th century, is a must-see. Today, only the castel tower and the ramparts remain, but they are well preserved. Located at the highest point of the city, it is surrounded by a well-tended garden from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley and the surrounding hills. On the first floor of the tower there is also a small military museum.
