Santarém District Guide

Between the regions of the Center and Alentejo, the district of Santarém is a land of character. This region was built around a large fertile valley on the banks of the Tagus River, which crosses it from one side to the other.

This district is home to some must-see places, such as the Almourol Castle: located on an islet in the middle of the Tagus, this surprising building was part of the river's defense line. Another must-see is the city of Fatima, known for the apparitions of the Virgin Mary that are said to have occurred there.

The city of Santarém, located only 80km from Lisbon, is situated on a hill bordering the right bank of the Tagus River. It has a charming historical center, breathtaking views of the Tagus River and a unique gastronomy.
