1. Castelo Branco

Castelo Branco and its surroundings

The district of Castelo Branco is located in the center of Portugal, only 2 hours drive from Lisbon. To the east, its border is shared with Spain, which has led to numerous attacks over the centuries.

Today, this peaceful area of Portugal is little visited by tourists and this is a shame because it has a lot to offer. Apart from the city of Castelo Branco, there are many picturesque villages full of charm. One of them, Monsanto, is a very charming stone village, not to be missed if you are in the area.

Lovers of wide open spaces will be delighted to visit the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal, where it is even possible to ski. The Serra da Malcata nature reserve is also an impressive natural area, home to the last Iberian lynxes but also to numerous foxes, deer and wild cats.
